Bedtime Stories and Why They Matter
There's a particular moment at the end of the day that most parents will recognise. The teeth are brushed, the lights are low, and for a few minutes — before sleep properly takes hold — you and your child share a story together.
It's easy to think of this as just part of the routine. Something to tick off before the day ends. But it's worth pausing on what's actually happening in that moment.
It's one of the few times in a busy day where there's no rush. No screens, no errands, nowhere else to be. Just a voice, a page, and a story unfolding together. For a child, it's a chance to slow down and let their imagination take over, right at the point where the outside world starts to fade.
That's what got us thinking, early on, about what we read in that specific window matters. If a story is the last thing running through a child's mind before sleep, might it shape the shape of their dreams — what they imagine, wonder about, or carry into the next day?
We don't know the answer for certain. But it felt like a reason to take that moment seriously. To write stories that are gentle enough for the end of the day, but interesting enough that a child (and the adult reading to them) actually wants to know what happens next — and looks forward to picking the story back up tomorrow.
That's the space we hope The Beans can hold: not just something to read before bed, but something worth looking forward to at the end of the day — for both of you.
